Jen was looking very sprightly at breakfast today. Ruddy cheeks and a big smile. But alas Kevin, her dear other half, was still in bed. "He had a terrible night, coughing all night," Jen told the others, before adding with glee "But I didn't hear a thing!" You see, Jen has not had a great streak of good nights since coming to India. As it turned out, Kevin didn't emerge from Rm 006 till dinner time, suffering fatigue and 'loose motion'.
Mose began the day a bit stronger but Yvonne complained of nausea and bloated stomach with pain. Like the perfect order of Mother Nature, the final two dominoes had fallen before the dreaded 'BUG of BENARAS'.
After a slow morning in the rooftop haven, the R's convinced the kids a boat ride would be just the ticket. And so it was. For an hour they floated in the cool breeze on the far bank of the river as Dinesh the boatman, explained how to saw the world, as a poor but honest Hindu man trying to do his best in a world that seemed rigged against the poor, honesty and effort.
Lunch was had at the Open Hand cafe which provided good food, free wifi and an opportunity to catch up on Christmas shopping for Melbourne based friends and relatives. In the afternoon the kids and Nate retired to the rooftop of the Palace while Yvonne had a short Aryuvedic massage. The Catos remained off the radar. Kevin, no doubt in sleep.
But at around 630 everyone convened for dinner at the Open Hand. It was our last night together and boy, what a lot has happened in so short a time. Though the kids were tired, Kev and Yvonne put on brave faces, we eventually all repaired to our rooms with promises to keep in touch and catch each other up on the last leg of our (mis)adventure when we met up in 2013 back in Oz.
Its been great and though we were ill too much of the time here in Varanasi we've all had a good time.
Catos board a train to Darjeeling and Calcutta. Rabes catch a morning flight to Goa!
